Head of the department
I am delighted to welcome you to the Department of Banking and Finance. The Department of Banking and Finance started as a program under the Department of Business Management in 2002 but became a full-fledged department in the 2004/2005 academic session. The Department has the responsibility to teach and conduct research in Banking and Finance-related fields in Covenant University, using cutting-edge technology-aided software and sound principles drawn from its proprietor base. The Department runs undergraduate and postgraduate programmes leading to the award of B.Sc, M.Sc and Ph.D degrees. We spearhead research and developments, thereby providing solutions in Banking, Finance and other related fields, among other University-wide responsibilities.
Our goal is to become one of the top ten ranked Department of Finance in the world. The Department provides lifelong learning through a professional focus underlined by sound academic processes. The department student enjoys high tactical and engaging practical training in Finance, Banking, Investment, and other related fields. Students are encouraged to work hard, read wide, and engage in self-development. Ours is a research and teaching based institution. Students in the department are taught the art of research, communicated through quality teaching pedagogy. The skills and knowledge acquired in the process enhance our students' competencies, which enable them to provide value-added services to their employers and society, thus furthering the banking and finance profession's standards and development.
The Department parades high-quality banking and finance professionals as faculty with 100 percent PhD holders. In addition, a number of the faculty possesses professional certification with the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAN), Chartered Institute of Stock Brokers (CIS) and other professional affiliates. Members of the Department have over 15 years of experience teaching Banking and Finance related courses. We have graduated over 500 students in our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes since inception.
We understand that career opportunity in the Banking and Finance-related field is not limited to the Banking sector; professionally certified Chartered Bankers have made successful exploits outside of the core banking profession. We, therefore, look forward to evolving into a full-fledged Finance Department with options in Banking, FinTech, Investment and Risk Management. The knowledge acquired in the Department can be gainfully applied to excel as a finance manager, consultant, financial analyst, Investment adviser, entrepreneur, banker and other related job functions. We are customer-centric, technology-savvy, more highly qualified, flexible, and agile with the skills necessary to drive change and impactful knowledge in our world.
